Product Description Police Lieutenant Phoebe MacNamara found her calling at an early age, when a violently unstable man broke into her family?s home, trapping and terrorizing them for hours. Now she?s Savannah?s top hostage negotiator, who puts her life on the line every day to defuse powder-keg situations. Phoebe knows when to reach out and when to pull back - and when to jump in and take action, even if it means risking everything.
It?s satisfying work - and sometimes those skills come in handy at home when Phoebe deals with her agoraphobic mother, still traumatized by the break-in after all these years, and her precocious seven-year-old daughter, Carly.
It?s exactly that heady combination of steely courage and sensitivity that first attracts Duncan Swift to Phoebe. After watching her talk one of his employees off a roof ledge, he is committed to keeping this intriguing, take-charge woman in his life. Phoebe?s used to working solo, but she?s finding that no amount of negotiation can keep Duncan at arm?s length.
When she?s grabbed by a man who throws a hood over her head and brutally assaults her - in her own precinct house - Phoebe can?t help being deeply shaken. And when threatening messages appear on her doorstep, she?s not just alarmed but frustrated. How do you go face-to-face with an opponent who refuses to look you in the eye?
Now, with Duncan backing her up every step of the way, she must establish contact with the faceless tormentor who is determined to make her a hostage to fear - before she becomes the final showdown.

Liked it! June 22, 2009 It amazes me that after what, 100+ books?, Nora Roberts can continue to create new characters and new storylines. Phoebe MacNamara and Duncan Swift are two of my favorites so far. I liked their easy report with each other, and the way their relationship wasn't the big drama in the story. There was a really obvious red herring in the story, but it didn't really take away from anything. Overall, another Nora classic!
P.S. The Lifetime movie was actually pretty decent, too. I haven't been impressed with most of them.
High Noon June 1, 2009 Phoebe MacNamara is a a hostage negotiator for the police department in Savannah. While she works to help a young bartender who is determined to end his life, she meets his former boss Duncan Swift. As they work together to save a life, sparks fly between Phoebe and Duncan. Duncan is living the dream many would envy. He is very wealthy, but Duncan didn't inherit it or earn it, he actually won the lottery.
As Duncan pursues Phoebe, he learns the reasons she doesn't want to get involved with anyone. She has an ex-husband that has dropped out of her daughter's life, and a mother that is home bound by choice. As Duncan invades Phoebe's life, she learns he really is fond of both her mother and daughter.
When she is targeted and terrorized, Phoebe must solve the mystery behind it before her family or Duncan are lost to her.
What a good read! The characters are well written, and the story is wonderful. I haven't read many stories about hostage negotiators, and I learned a lot. It was a little more violent than I am used to, but it was important to the story.
Got a kick out of it! February 3, 2009 What a strong woman Phoebe is - she is smart and clear thinking. I thought the way she handled the stairway incident was very good. This type of thing happens and it's good that Phoebe shows that it's okay to be a victim as long as you don't allow that to define you.
I loved Duncan. What a way to get rich! I thought he was very good with Phoebe's mother, loved the flowers for the daughter. The way he makes others a part of his family makes him a very lucky person and he seems to understand that.
All in all, I thought it was well worth the reading time and would recommend it to others. It's not a red hot romance but it's a really nice story.

This was the best novel, even the best Nora Roberts novel I've read in YEARS! And I love Nora Roberts!
Ho hum.... December 20, 2008 Nora Roberts can write in a variety of 'voices.' This time she writes about Phoebe MacNamara, hostage negotiator. The ultimate climax of the tale is when Phoebe is at the center of a negotiation. What brings her there is a long boring story. Explaining the ultimate direction of the book by its end is so far fetched. The characters, by and large, are somewhat simple and don't hold your interest. Where there might be a plot line to explore, it meets a dead end time after time. Wish it had been better.
